The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.
Replay systems will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Athletes are granted the right to contest specific calls from the official, following the system already in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
The new system will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This move arrives only a year after the All England Club rolled out ELC, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to review specific situations, including:
- Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
- Potential hindrance end of a rally.
Importantly, there is no cap on the number of reviews a player can ask for.
A Recent Example
A recent incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
The British player admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system in place at all of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was out or in.
Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
