The Year 2026 Dubbed the Era of the Amphibian Adventure.
My key observation from the recent indie games event was undoubtedly entertaining, my biggest takeaway was perhaps unexpected: I am declaring that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.
No fewer than five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these hoppy characters. Given that a band of frogs is termed an army, it appears they are staking their claim.
A Legacy of Leaping
Croaking characters are far from new to the world of games. Ever since the era of Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a special place. Yet, their popularity has markedly surged in recent times.
A simple search for "frog game" on Steam yields an overwhelming flood of results. While, some of these are novelty titles, a sizable number are legitimate titles centered on frogs.
Tracking the Tadpole Trend
To quantify this phenomenon, I performed a detailed review into the past five years of frog-related gaming on Steam. My criteria was based on clear indicators, focusing on games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.
The data reveal an unmistakable trend: a marked increase from less than 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.
This significant surge prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The creature's growing prominence in the broader culture is partially evident elsewhere, for example the popularity of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. Yet, the trend in gaming seems especially pronounced.
Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage
Honestly, this is a shift I can get behind. Frogs have natural design advantages for game developers.
- Unique Characters: They are ideally shaped to be designed as endearing characters that frequently end up as a standout feature in any game.
- Unique Gameplay: Their long tongues and grappling abilities lend themselves to a host of unique mechanics.
Several the announced projects directly leverage these traits. For instance the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.
What the Future Holds
So, what is the outlook for 2026? Given five frog games confirmed for release before the year has even started—and the potential for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the most significant year yet.
If these games are received positively—and based on past trends, games from this showcase often do—we may indeed be entering a genuine frog gaming renaissance.
