Federal Reserve Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year during financial volatility stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed usually analyzes labor statistics to determine employment trends, including the number of new jobs created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in early September, prior to the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline

Though BLS was set to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that showed that prices are rising, although slowly. Prices rose 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
