‘Every minor detail – execute them’: The striker’s path from gurney to goals with the Basque club
Thehe debut appearance Gorka Guruzeta competed in England, an young representing the youth squad against Bundesliga youth at Wycombe’s stadium in fall 2015, he found the net. The second time he appeared in the country, against the English side two months later, he netted. Another occasion, against Pep Guardiola’s team six weeks after that, indeed, he did it once more. As he revisited to Manchester to face United at Leigh’s ground in 2017, he scored again. An excellent finish, too. “Actually,” he says, “it ranks among my finest in my career.” Therefore the team did their duty: they substituted him.
“I was furious,” the forward reveals, before breaking into laughter. “There must be a video somewhere. Our match against United and I performed well. They kept me out of the second half: my contract wasn’t finalized deal, I was scoring goals, there were lots of rumours, as you’d expect. I don’t know about interest from Newcastle, but I remember reading about Manchester United, the usual talk. I have no idea the validity, but had they contacted me, I would have wanted to stay at Bilbao. I’m fortunate to be here.”
La Real relieve strain with extraordinary derby triumph
At the training ground, the Basque Country, the morning session is set to begin; post-session, the short journey to Loiu and another flight to England, now to play Newcastle in the European elite competition on Wednesday. Just saying those two words makes Guruzeta smile. It’s turning out to be a challenging campaign for the club, partially owing to the demands of competing at this level. Defeated late on in the derby on Saturday, they have managed just one win of their past eight league games and lost against Arsenal and the German side in European competition. Yet, consider the broader view, the major occasions he’s experienced and future challenges, and a sense of thankful reflection within him.
In the the period since he had returned to the club, Guruzeta has been a final four contender in Europe, stopped at the gates a final at home by Manchester United, and has traveled on a traditional boat along the Nervión river surrounded by countless supporters after securing the Spanish cup, the club’s first trophy in 40 years. He’s now the top goal-getter in the European competition, where they are countercultural and returning after absence in a decade. “I couldn’t have pictured this,” he admits.
He considered it difficult enough just to break into the senior squad and his assessment was correct. As the child of the one-time rival player the former professional and a regular attendee at the club that are now his rivals, the forward is from the Antiguoko academy, the San Sebastián club that nurtured the coach, the former star and the Bournemouth manager. His move to Athletic came at his teens but after making his senior debut in the 2018 season, he suffered a ACL injury, dropped, a demotion and a return before he could finally secure an opportunity, coming back aged 26 to live the best days of his career.
“Joining the setup not expecting to reach the top level but each step you go through you’re still there and you can observe the approach. You get there but … departure is necessary.” He played six, nine, five, one, four and 20 minutes in half a dozen appearances between his first game and February 2019. “Subsequently I returned to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. A few matches at that level and I suffered the ACL injury.
“It was a huge blow but I reflect on it as a turning point because it shifted the perspective. The rehabilitation process is hard, but it’s beneficial. You develop habits you didn’t have. It’s not that you don’t look after yourself, but I would go to training and then go home, typical youth behavior. At the complex, you have everything, so utilize it all. Work, precaution. Strength training. With hip imbalance, address that. With decent ankle function, make it a 12 or a 14. All those ‘silly things’: execute them.
“At the top level you’re going to collide with opponents who have crashed into players countless occasions. Highly robust. Seeing previous pictures: my physique was slight. Thus incidents occur. Look at pictures of me now and it’s totally different. Injury made me see that. Sessions end, but further effort is needed. Teammates are set, really ready; the same applies.”
Minutes are crucial. He left in tears in that year, in his early twenties, moving to a lower level. During his Sabadell spell in that season, he scored three times in forty appearances. With Amorebieta in the following period, the goals started to flow. “Players go through it: temporary moves, ended deals. With a turnaround, work, believe, and when eventually a vacancy arises where you play, they might come back for you. Readiness is vital. When they decided to call again, it was a dream come true. Lifting the cup, European football, and reach the Champions League … pfff.”
Understandably he remarks savor the moment. All the more so after the previous season which, at times, was focused on persistence. After being leading scorer with a high tally, his output dropped to seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
